Materials We Work With

Tarmacadam (Tarmac)

Tarmacadam, or tarmac, is made using macadam surfaces, tar and sand. Tarmac is also used to refer to a variety of other materials, including tar-grouted macadam, bituminous surface treatments and modern asphalt concrete. It is a popular road surface material, especially for constructing smaller roads.

Asphalt

The most popular road surface material, Asphalt is formulated by mixing aggregates, bitumen, lime, and sand or finely crushed stone. Hot-rolled asphalt and stone mastic asphalt are specially designed for heavier traffic usage, making it perfect for roads, especially highways.

Gravel

Gravel, made from crushed stone or pebbles, is a cost-effective road surface that only needs compacting onto a solid base. With excellent natural drainage, it eliminates the need for complex drainage systems and is commonly used for rural roads and private roads like farm tracks, where water can easily disperse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most durable road surface material?

Asphalt is the most durable road surface material, making it the best option for high-traffic roads. Made of Bitumen, a strong, long-lasting binder, asphalt is known for its high strength and durability.

Tarmac is another great material option, coming in at 2nd place for its durability. Made of Tar, which is less durable than bitumen, tarmac is more prone to wear and tear over time.

How long does it take to surface a road?

The time it takes to complete your project will vary depending on the size of the surface area, the material you choose, and the level of prep work required. Smaller private roads may only take a couple of weeks, while major road construction, such as a large bypass, can take years.

How long will a road last before it needs resurfacing?

The lifespan of a road surface depends on various factors, including materials, traffic levels, and construction quality. A well-built road by experienced surfacing contractors can last up to 70 years before resurfacing is needed, though techniques like surface dressing can help extend its lifespan.

How much does it cost to resurface a road?

The cost of road surfacing varies significantly depending on the material chosen, the extent of the preparatory work required and, naturally, the size of the road. For a free, no-obligation quote, get in touch with A&MT, a trusted road surfacing company.
